2nd half surge sends Grove City to finals

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team scored three goals in an 11-minute span of the second half Wednesday night on the way to a 3-1 home win over fifth-seeded Waynesburg in the semifinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, held at Don Lyle Field.

The win sends top-seeded Grove City (13-2-4) into Saturday's championship round. Grove City, the three-time defending conference champion, will host No. 3 seed Saint Vincent at 4:30 p.m. The Bearcats bounced No. 2 Allegheny in the other semifinal Wednesday night, 1-0.

Grove City broke the scoreless tie 76 seconds into the second half when senior midfielder Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) scored her team-leading 14th goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Ana Hahn (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) assisted Stevenson's goal.

Stevenson then scored the eventual game-winning goal, unassisted, at 56:25. Hahn pushed the lead to 3-0 one minute later with an unassisted score at 57:32. It is Hahn's third goal of the season.

Waynesburg (9-9-1) cut the lead to 3-1 at 86:22 on a goal by Amanda Pepe.

Grove City amassed a 33-16 edge in shots, including a 16-5 margin in shots on goal. Each team had six corner kicks.

Senior goalie Maddie Mills (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) stopped four shots to earn her 26th career win.

Stevenson now has 49 career goals after scoring twice Wednesday. She is tied for third in program history with Michelle Novosel (2001-04) in career goals. Stevenson is fourth in program history with 107 career points. Her 15 goals this year are tied for eighth in program history. She scored 16 goals last year.

Mills moved into sole possession of sixth in program history with 26 goalkeeping victories.

Grove City and Saint Vincent played to a scoreless draw September 19 in Latrobe. This will be the first championship round meeting between the programs.
