WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore pitcher
Bryce Trischler (Mars, Pa./Shady Side Academy) fired a 10-inning complete game Friday night while freshman shortstop
Sam Meredith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) cracked a two-run single in the top of the 10th inning to help the Grove City College baseball team pull out a 4-1 win over host Washington & Jefferson in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.
Grove City (30-10) improved to 3-0 in the tournament and will play Westminster in the championship round Saturday. The loss eliminated W&J, the five-time defending conference kingpin, from the tournament.
Sophomore third baseman
Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) led off the 10th inning with a double and moved to third on a groundout to second base by junior center fielder
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). Walks to junior first baseman
Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) and senior right fielder
Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) loaded the bases for Meredith.
Meredith's single through the left side gave Grove City the lead. Minnich later scored an insurance run when junior second baseman
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) hit a bouncer to shortstop. Minnich beat the throw home, pushing the lead to 4-1.
Trischler then retired W&J in order in the bottom of the inning on eight pitches. The left-hander faced the minimum in 6 of 10 innings. He allowed four hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Marinpetro broke a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning when his two-out single brought home sophomore pinch runner
David Chandler (Leesburg, Va./St. John's).
W&J tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on Jacob LaDuca's solo home run to left. LaDuca hit game-winning home runs against Grove City in the 2023 and 2024 conference tournaments.
Bevin went 3 for 5 with two doubles. Junior left fielder
Andrew Seest (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) doubled while going 3 for 3. Meredith also doubled. Grove City finished with 11 hits.
Grove City's 30 wins tie the program's single-season record, set two years ago.
Longtime rival Westminster awaits Grove City in Saturday's championship round. The Titans remained alive Friday afternoon with a 3-2 win over Saint Vincent in an elimination game. Grove City needs one win Saturday to capture the conference title while Westminster must win twice to claim the crown.
The teams split a March 25 doubleheader at Jack Behringer Field. Visiting Westminster won Game One, 11-9, while Grove City rebounded for a 12-4 win in the nightcap.
Grove City's first-ever intercollegiate sporting event came against Westminster in 1884, as the Wolverines defeated Westminster in baseball, 4-3.
