Grove City blanks Gators in tourney opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Sophomore pitcher Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) fired a three-hit shutout Thursday afternoon to help lift the Grove City College softball team to a 7-0 victory over visiting Allegheny in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at College Field.

The top-seeded Wolverines (25-11) will now face No. 2 seed Westminster at 2 p.m. Friday in the winner's bracket final.

Offensively, the Wolverines pounded out 14 hits, led by 3-for-4 outings from junior center fielder Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) and senior first baseman Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore). Anthony tripled, doubled and singled while Brodie laced a double and two singles.

Senior third baseman Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa./New Castle), sophomore DP Emma Covert (Chicora, Pa./Moniteau) and sophomore left fielder Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) all had two hits.

Montone and senior second baseman Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) both had run-scoring singles in the second inning to open the scoring. Brodie's two-run double scored Montone and Linhart, extending the lead to 4-0.

The Wolverines added two runs in the third as Anthony scored on a Zona single while sophomore pinch runner Abby Stouffer (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) crossed home on a passed ball.

Brodie scored on an error in the sixth inning.

Meadors (12-4) threw her second shutout of the season. She struck out six batters, allowed only three singles and walked two.

Grove City's 25 wins match the single-season program record set in 2024. Grove City split a home doubleheader April 9 with Westminster at College Field. Westminster won the first game, 2-0, while Grove City captured a 9-4 win in the second game.

Westminster defeated No. 6 seed Thiel in Thursday's fourth game, 11-0. The Grove City-Westminster winner advances to Saturday's championship round. Tournament action resumes at 10 a.m. Friday with elimination games. Bethany faces Thiel while Geneva meets Allegheny.
