MUNHALL, Pa. -- It may have taken until after midnight, but the Grove City College softball team improved to 9-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by sweeping Chatham in a doubleheader that started Friday night and finished early Saturday morning at West Field. Grove City (18-5) won the opener in eight innings, 3-2, then rallied for a 15-10 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, sophomore pinch hitter
Emma Covert (Chicora, Pa./Moniteau) broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the eighth inning by doubling home senior first baseman
Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore). Chatham put the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the eighth inning but winning pitcher
Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) retired Isabelle Griswold to end the game.
Meadors (8-1) threw a four-hitter in Game One as she struck out eight batters. The sophomore allowed two earned runs. She also doubled.
Grove City grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Brodie tripled in sophomore left fielder
Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and then scored on a groundout by sophomore DP
Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry).
Chatham tied the game with single runs in the first and fourth innings.
Senior second baseman
Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) paced Grove City in the nightcap by going 3 for 5. Brodie went 2 for 5 with three runs scored. Jackson doubled and senior right fielder
Annika Rinehart (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) belted a triple.
Grove City trailed 3-0 in the third inning but surged ahead with a five-run outburst. Brodie singled home freshman pinch runner
Elena Tylka (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) to help ignite the rally. Consecutive bases loaded walks to freshman third baseman
Sydney Shay (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and junior center fielder
Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) tied the game.
Junior pitcher
Kyla Campbell (Altoona, Pa./Glendale) laced a go-ahead two-run single that scored Shay and Covert.
Shay's two-run single highlighted Grove City's four-run fourth inning. Montone and Brodie also cracked run-scoring singles in the inning.
Grove City pushed its lead to 11-7 in the fifth inning with a pair of unearned runs. Chatham pulled to within 11-10 in the bottom of the fifth. Grove City broke open the game with four more runs in the top of the seventh, however.
Jackson walked with the bases loaded, forcing in senior shortstop
Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa./New Castle). Shay scored when junior catcher
Jonalyn Wharry (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) hit into a force play. Linhart closed the scoring when her two-run single scored Rinehart and Wharry.
Campbell (7-1) earned the win by pitching 4 2/3 innings. She struck out three and allowed five earned runs. Brodie recorded her first save of the season with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. She struck out three and allowed only two hits.
The Wolverines will host Westminster in a conference doubleheader Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at College Field.
