Vittone's record-setting day highlights sweep

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Senior second baseman Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) became the Grove City College baseball program's career leader in runs and hits Saturday after as the Wolverines secured a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference road wins over Thiel at Tomcat Park. Grove City captured a 12-1 win Game One and then secured a 10-5 triumph in the nightcap.

Vittone went 3 for 8 with five runs scored in Saturday's twinbill. He now has 150 career runs scored and 191 career hits. Scott Moran scored 149 runs from 2008 to 2011 while Micah Burke collected a Grove City-record 189 hits from 2016 to 2019.

Vittone, freshman DH Kallen Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and sophomore third baseman Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) all had two hits in the opener for the Wolverines. Bevin opened the scoring when he scored on a first-inning groundout by junior first baseman Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny).

Grove City (25-9, 15-3) broke open the first game with a six-run second inning. Vittone scored when senior catcher Sam DiStefano (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) hit into a fielder's choice. Durbin scored on a subsequent error. Bevin then doubled home DiStefano and junior left fielder Andrew Seest (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) to give the Wolverines a 5-0 lead.

Bevin later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). Marinpetro scored the sixth run of the inning when freshman shortstop Sam Meredith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) singled to right field.

Marinpetro's bases-loaded walk scored Seest in the third inning while Vittone came home on a passed ball in the fourth. Marinpetro singled in DiStefano in the fifth inning, giving Grove City a 10-0 lead. In the eighth inning, Vittone scored on an error while Bevin's groundout scored sophomore pinch runner David Chandler (Leesburg, Va./St. John's).

Senior pitcher David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler) allowed no earned runs and two hits in seven innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out three men. Leslie improved to 8-1. Sophomore Michael Earman (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) pitched a perfect eighth inning in relief. The game ended after eight innings due to the 10-run rule.

Bevin, Marinpetro, Meredith and senior right fielder Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) all had two hits in Game Two as Grove City jumped out to a 10-0 lead after four innings.

Minnich highlighted Grove City's four-run first inning with a two-run single that scored Marinpetro and Sampson. Marinpetro drove in sophomore catcher Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) with a groundout in the second inning. Weber's fielder's choice in the third inning pushed home Meredith with the sixth run of the game while Vittone scored on an error later in the inning.

Durbin and Weber both stroked run-scoring singles in the fourth inning and Vittone added an RBI groundout.

Sophomore pitcher Bryce Trischler (Mars, Pa./Shady Side Academy) struck out seven men in eight innings to earn the win. Trischler (5-1) allowed four earned runs and seven hits. Sophomore Jack Houston (Vienna, Va./Vienna) closed out the win with a scoreless ninth inning of relief.

Grove City's 11-game winning streak is the longest for the Wolverines under the guidance of 10th-year head coach Matt Royer. Marinpetro now has a 26-game hitting streak. That's the longest hitting streak for a Grove City player since Andy Fritz hit in 27 straight games over the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

The Wolverines will visit Hiram at 4 p.m. Monday for a single non-conference game. The home and conference schedules conclude next Saturday at 1 p.m. against Saint Vincent at Jack Behringer Field.
