LITTLE RIVER, S.C. -- The Grove City College softball team scored 29 total runs in only 10 innings Thursday as the Wolverines picked up two wins at North Myrtle Beach Park. Grove City opened the day with a 17-6 win over Bay Path, then secured a 12-2 victory over Brooklyn in the nightcap. Both games went only five innings due to the 10-run rule.
The Wolverines (4-3) pounded out 21 hits in the opener as seven players produced multi-hit outings. Junior DP
Kyla Campbell (Altoona, Pa./Glendale) homered, doubled and drove in five runs as part of a 5-for-5 performance. Sophomore left fielder
Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) went 3 for 4 with a double, three runs scored and four runs batted in.
Senior second baseman
Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) tripled and singled for Grove City. Senior pitcher
Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore), senior shortstop
Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa./New Castle), junior center fielder
Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) and sophomore first baseman
Emma Covert (Chicora, Pa./Moniteau) all added two singles. Anthony and Linhart both drove in two runs.
Grove City trailed 3-0 in the second inning but erupted for seven runs. Anthony and Montone both had two-run singles while Campbell, Covert and Zona also had run-scoring singles. Linhart's two-run triple and Campbell's three-run homer highlighted Grove City's seven-run outburst in the third inning.
Brodie earned the pitching win by yielding two earned runs in five innings. She struck out three, walked two and permitted four hits.
Montone tripled and doubled to help lead Grove City in the win over Brooklyn. Senior right fielder
Annika Rinehart (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) and sophomore pitcher
Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) both doubled and singled while Campbell went 2 for 2 with a sacrifice fly.
Sophomore first baseman
Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) tripled and Anthony doubled as Grove City finished with 12 hits.
Campbell gave Grove City a 1-0 lead in the first inning when she singled in Montone. In the second inning, Linhart laced a two-run single while Anthony followed with a two-run triple. She then scored on a groundout by junior catcher
Kristin Tesch (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Township).
Meadors struck out eight batters in five innings to earn the win. She allowed two earned runs, three hits and did not walk a batter.
Grove City will close its Spring Break trip Friday with two games. The Wolverines face Albion at 9 a.m. Grove City then plays Valley Forge at 11 a.m. in the finale.
