LITTLE RIVER, S.C. -- The Grove City College softball team split a pair of games Tuesday at North Myrtle Beach Park as the Wolverines continued their five-day, 10-game Spring Break trip. The Wolverines (2-2) opened the day with a 6-1 victory over Cedar Crest.
Waynesburg University slipped past Grove City, 3-2, in the second game.
Junior pitcher
Kyla Campbell (Altoona, Pa./Glendale) fired a two-hitter against Cedar Crest in her first Grove City start. The right-hander struck out five and walked one while taking a shutout into the sixth inning.
Campbell also doubled and singled to help lead Grove City's 10-hit attack. Senior right fielder
Annika Rinehart (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) and sophomore DP
Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) both went 2 for 4 while freshman third baseman
Sydney Shay (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) doubled.
Grove City grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third inning as senior shortstop
Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) scored on an error, sophomore left fielder
Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) came home on a Meadors single and junior center fielder
Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) scored on a wild pitch.
Zona singled in freshman pinch runner
Sydney McBride (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) in the fourth inning, giving Grove City a 4-0 advantage. In the fifth, freshman
Elena Tylka (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) scored on a double steal and Campbell later crossed the plate on a Rinehart single.
Grove City trailed Waynesburg 2-1 in the top of the seventh but Montone's two-out single and a throwing error allowed senior second baseman
Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) to score the tying run. Waynesburg broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh with a bases loaded fielder's choice, however.
Montone went 2 for 4 against Waynesburg.
Meadors pitched six innings. She allowed two runs and six hits. Sophomore
Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) recorded one out in the seventh and took the setback.
The Wolverines will play Lancaster Bible at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Grove City then faces Rosemont at 1 p.m. in Wednesday's second game.
