Offense carries Grove City to sweep

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team cranked out 28 runs and 36 hits Thursday evening on the way to a pair of wins at Washington & Jefferson. 

Grove City earned a 16-7 win in Game One, then secured a 12-10 triumph in the nightcap to complete a sweep of the Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Brooks Park. Game Two ended after six innings due to darkness.

The sweep extends Grove City's winning streak to nine game.

Nine of Grove City's 22 hits in Game One went for extra bases. Senior first baseman Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore), junior center fielder Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) and sophomore left fielder Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) all doubled twice. 

Senior second baseman Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) tripled while senior third baseman Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) and junior shortstop Kyle Campbell (Altoona, Pa./Glendale) both doubled.

Anthony went 5 for 5 with three runs scored while Montone went 4 for 6. Brodie and sophomore DP Emma Covert (Chicora, Pa./Moniteau) both finished 3 for 5. Covert drove in four runs. Campbell, Linhart and Zona all finished with two hits in the opener. 

Covert gave Grove City a 2-0 lead with a two-run single in the top of the first. She also cracked a two-run single in the second inning. Campbell laced a two-run double while Zona doubled in Anthony in the inning as the Wolverines grabbed a 7-3 lead. 

Linhart tripled in Montone and Anthony in the third inning, then scored the Wolverines' 10th run on an error. Campbell and Brodie both had run-scoring singles in the fifth inning, pushing the lead to 12-3.

Grove City sewed up the Game One win in the seventh inning as Anthony doubled home Covert and Brodie. Zona singled in senior right fielder Annika Rinehart (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry)/ Anthony later scored on a double steal.

Sophomore pitcher Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) earned the win after throwing a complete game. She allowed five earned runs and six hits while striking out eight batters.

The Wolverines bolted to a 9-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game. Montone launched a three-run homer during the inning while Linhart and sophomore DP Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) both had run-scoring doubles. 

Jackson and junior catcher Kristin Tesch (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) also singled in runs during the nine-run outburst. Montone's two-run single in the second inning gave Grove City an 11-0 lead. 

W&J rallied and cut the lead to 11-10. However, Montone drove in Brodie with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to close the scoring.

Tesch finished 3 for 3 while Montone went 3 for 4 with six runs batted in. Brodie went 2 for 3 with three runs scored. Freshman third baseman Sydney Shay (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) doubled and singled. Jackson and Linhart also finished with two hits.

Campbell earned the win by pitching into the fifth inning. She went 4 1/3 innings. Meadors earned the save by recording the final five outs. She allowed one hit and no runs in her relief outing. 

The Wolverines will host Waynesburg University at 1 p.m. Saturday in a conference doubleheader.
