Grove City opens with sweep

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball opened its home and Presidents' Athletic Conference schedules Saturday afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader from visiting Thiel at blustery College Field. Grove City won the opener, 2-1, then picked up a 10-0 win in Game Two. The nightcap went only 4 1/2 innings due to the 8-run rule.

Sophomore pitcher Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) fired a three-hitter in the opener while striking out a season-high 12 batters. Junior pitcher Kyla Campbell (Altoona, Pa./Glendale) followed with a two-hit shutout in the second game.

Grove City (9-4, 2-0) belted six extra-base hits in Game Two, including a leadoff home run from sophomore left fielder Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland). Sophomore DP Emma Covert (Chicora, Pa./Moniteau) doubled twice while Campbell, senior right fielder Annika Rinehart (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) and freshman third baseman Sydney Shay (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) all doubled.

Shay finished 3 for 3 while Campbell and Covert both went 2 for 3. Senior first baseman Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) went 1 for 2 and scored three runs.

Grove City jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Following Montone's homer, senior second baseman Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior center fielder Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion). Brodie scored on an error while Rinehart and Shay followed with back-to-back run-scoring doubles.

Covert doubled in Brodie in the third inning. She then scored on a Shay single. Brodie and Shay both stroked run-scoring singles in the fourth inning while Covert's second double brought home Brodie.

Campbell struck out three and walked one. She improved to 3-0 in the circle and now has a 1.09 earned run average for the season.

Meadors recorded the third double-digit strikeout performance of her career. She had a career-best 13 strikeouts March 27, 2024 against Franciscan.

Grove City will visit Pitt-Bradford in non-conference play Monday at 3 p.m.

Anthony scored both Grove City runs in Game One. She led off the bottom of the third inning with a triple and scored on Montone's foul out near the first base dugout.

In the fifth inning, Anthony singled, stole second and came home when senior third baseman Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) singled up the middle.

Anthony finished 2 for 2. Montone tripled. Thiel pitcher Becca Landis held Grove City to five hits in the opener.
