Grove City sweeps Bobcats

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened its northern schedule Saturday by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader at Pitt-Greensburg. The Wolverines (7-4) won the opener, 4-1, then captured a 13-0 victory in Game Two.

Junior pitcher Kyla Campbell (Altoona, Pa./Glendale) fired a four-hit shutout in the nightcap. She struck out six, did not walk a batter and yielded only four singles.

Offensively, Grove City pounded out 15 hits in the victory. Senior second baseman Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) went 3 for 4 with three runs batted in while senior shortstop Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) went 2 for 2 with three runs scored.

Senior first baseman Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) doubled and singled while sophomore left fielder Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and senior right fielder Annika Rinehart (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) both singled twice. Campbell and sophomore Emma Covert (Chicora, Pa./Moniteau) each laced doubles.

Brodie gave Grove City a 1-0 lead in the first inning when she doubled in Linhart. The lead swelled to 3-0 in the second inning as junior DP Lily DeMeio (Butler, Pa./Butler) scored on a wild pitch and Rinehart came home on a sacrifice fly from freshman third baseman Sydney Shay (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg).

Linhart's two-run single in the fourth plated Montone and Zona. Campbell doubled in Zona to give Grove City a 6-0 lead in the sixth inning. Grove City then broke open the game with a seven-run seventh inning. Linhart, Montone, Zona and freshman Ellie Day (New Marshfield, Ohio/Alexander) all had run-scoring singles in the seventh inning.

Two Pitt-Greensburg errors in the top of the fifth helped Grove City take a 2-0 lead in Game One. Junior center fielder Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) pushed the lead to 3-0 when her sixth-inning single scored sophomore DP Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry).

Campbell's groundout in the seventh inning scored Linhart. Linhart finished 3 for 4 with a double while sophomore pitcher Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) went 2 for 3.

Meadors struck out eight batters in seven innings to secure the win. She allowed six hits.

Grove City will host Thiel next Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener. It will also be the Wolverines' home opener at College Field.
