Camden Thomas (North Lima, Ohio/South Range) scored two goals while junior midfielder
Noah Gray (Glen Mills, Pa./The Christian Academy) added a goal and two assists Wednesday evening to help the Grove City College men's soccer team earn a 4-2 win over visiting Franciscan (8-7, 6-1) in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Don Lyle Field.
The win vaults Grove City (9-2-2, 6-0-1) into first place in the conference with 19 points. Franciscan sits second in the 12-team league with 18 points.Â
Junior forward
Ryan Merrick (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) added a goal in the second half for the Wolverines, who are 8-0-1 in their last nine matches.Â
Thomas gave Grove City a 1-0 lead 3:11 into the match with his first goal of the night. Gray assisted the score.Â
Franciscan forged a 1-1 tie when Anthony Venditti scored at 33:22. Gray broke the tie with 8:04 left in the first half when he converted a penalty kick into his conference-leading 13th goal of the season.Â
Grove City then sealed the win with two goals in the final eight minutes. Merrick scored off another Gray assist at the 82:16 mark. Thomas's unassisted goal at 85:43 pushed the lead to 4-1.Â
Franciscan closed the scoring with eight seconds left on a goal by Andrew Godutti.Â
Each team had seven shots on goal. Grove City owned a 30-11 edge in total shots. Grove City also attained a 7-4 margin in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper
Keller Krieger (Jacksonville, Fla./Providence) made five saves to secure the win.
Conference teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw.Â
Grove City will visit Chatham (3-7-5, 1-2-4) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
