Defense, special teams lead way in Homecoming win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior cornerback Dominic DiNinno (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown while sophomore cornerback Noah Wheeler (McKinney, Texas/McKinney Christian) returned a blocked field goal 80 yards for a touchdown Saturday afternoon to help the Grove City College football team earn a 24-14 Homecoming win over Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Robert E. Thorn Field.

Grove City recorded three takeaways and blocked two kicks in Saturday's win. DiNinno had two interceptions while senior free safety Keagan Fraser (Butler, Pa./Knoch) sealed the win by intercepting a pass with 1:43 left in the game.

Senior linebacker Jack Jollie (Jeannette, Pa./Penn-Trafford) blocked the 32-yard field goal attempt that Wheeler returned. Freshman linebacker Nick Clemens (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) deflected a second quarter punt that junior safety Jase Herrick (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) returned to the Waynesburg 20. That special teams play set up Grove City's first points, a 34-yard field goal from freshman kicker Brady Lane (Jefferson, Ga./Mill Creek) with 8:48 left in the first half.

DiNinno's interception return to the end zone gave Grove City a 10-0 lead with 7:98 left in the second quarter.

Waynesburg pulled to within 10-7 on Carson Shriver's one-yard touchdown run with 65 seconds left in the second quarter. Waynesburg drove 60 yards to the Grove City 15 on the first drive of the second half prior to Jollie's blocked field goal and Wheeler's runback.

Waynesburg trimmed the lead to 17-14 when Joanes Polynice returned a fumble 48 yards for a touchdown with 1:34 left in the third quarter. But Grove City answered on its next drive as junior quarterback Sutton Ellis (Brunswick, Ga./Frederica Academy) fired a 24-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Daniel Sullivan (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) with 12:45 remaining in the game.

Sullivan caught three passes for 42 yards. Ellis completed 7 of 17 attempts for 83 yards. Senior running back Ian Demeri (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) led Grove City with 89 rushing yards on 19 carries while junior running back Chase Rankin (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) added 85 yards on 15 rushing attempts.

Fraser, Jollie and senior linebacker Caleb Brubaker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) all had seven tackles for Grove City. Freshman nose tackle Kellan Taylor (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) split two sacks, one each with Brubaker and junior defensive end Dave Cowher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon).

Waynesburg outgained Grove City, 318-242. Waynesburg quarterback Luke Hudson completed 19 of 32 passes for 252 yards. Shriver led the Jackets with 50 rushing yards on 19 carries.

Grove City has won seven straight Homecoming games.

The Wolverines (3-2, 2-1 PAC) will visit Allegheny next Saturday at 4 p.m. in conference action.
