W&J slips past Grove City in title game

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a 4-2 verdict at top-seeded Washington & Jefferson in the championship game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, which concluded Saturday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.

Senior pitcher Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) struck out a season-high 10 men while throwing a five-hit complete game. The left-hander did not walk a batter while throwing a complete game three days after he tossed eight shutout innings against Westminster in the opening round of the tournament.

Grove City (27-14) seized a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when freshman second baseman Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) doubled and then scored on a single by freshman left fielder Caison Holland (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge). Bevin belted a solo home run in the fifth inning to give Grove City a 2-0 lead.

Bevin went 3 for 4 with two doubles. Grove City finished with six hits.

W&J tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, then took the lead in the seventh when shortstop Jacob LaDuca hit an opposite field two-run homer to right field. In the 2023 conference tournament, LaDuca broke a 3-3 tie in the 10th inning against Grove City with a game-winning home run to right field.

Guidas finished the season with 96 strikeouts, which is the second-highest single-season total in program history. His 258 career strikeouts are also second in program history while his 19 wins are No. 5. Bevin, Guidas and junior pitcher David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler) earned All-Tournament honors.

Guidas, first baseman Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian), second baseman Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) and pitcher Christian Hoffmann (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) will graduate from the program. Grove City accumulated 113 wins over the last four seasons.
