GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's lacrosse team earned a 17-6 home victory Wednesday night over No. 4 seed Westminster in the semifinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, held at Robert E. Thorn Field.
Top-seeded Grove City (14-4) will host No. 2 Allegheny in Saturday afternoon's title game. Allegheny outlasted No. 3 Saint Vincent in Thursday's other semifinal bout, 16-12.
Junior attack
Kobi Bui (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and junior midfielder
Zachary Hougan (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) both fired in four goals to help pace the Grove City offense while junior attack
Matt Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) pumped in three goals.
Senior midfielder
Griffen Agawa (San Ramon, Calif./California) added two goals and two assists. Junior midfielders
Alec Jones (Chesterfield, N.J./Notre Dame) and
Luke Jayne (Vero Beach, Fla./Saint Edward's) both scored, as did sophomore attack
Rigdon Greene (Marietta, Ga./Pope) and sophomore faceoff specialist
Colton Lehberg (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian).
Greene, Hougan and graduate student attack
James Petrolle (Damascus, Md./Damascus) joined Agawa in assisting two goals. Blythe and sophomore midfielder
Boden Davidson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian) each recorded assists.
Grove City held a 3-2 lead with 3:25 remaining in the first quarter but Blythe scored twice and Hougan scored off an Agawa assist to help the Wolverines take a 6-2 lead into the second period.
Bui, Blythe and Hougan all scored in the second quarter as Grove City led 9-4 at halftime. Agawa and Lehberg scored in a 10-second span of the third quarter as the Wolverine lead grew to 12-5 after 45 minutes.
Lehberg led the Wolverines with eight ground balls. He won 13 of 24 faceoffs. Bui and junior midfielder
Trey Zabroski (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) each had four ground balls. Sophomore defender
Sam Stevenson (Greenwood, Ind../Center Grove) caused two turnovers.
Grove City held a 58-41 edge in total shots, including a 37-19 advantage in shots on goal. Grove City had 15 turnovers while pressuring Westminster (10-8) into 22 turnovers.
Senior goalie
Danny Stone (Chantilly, Va./Flint Hill) stopped 13 shots to earn the win.
Grove City will host Allegheny at 4 p.m. Saturday in the conference tournament title game. The Wolverines defeated Allegheny, 22-6, April 20 at Thorn Field during the regular season.
