Another sweep for surging Wolverines

MONACA, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team earned its third doubleheader sweep in a six-day span Saturday by taking a pair of non-conference games from host Penn State Beaver. Grove City rallied from a 7-2 deficit in the fifth inning of Game One to earn a 21-8 victory.

In Game Two, Grove City led 9-0 in the second inning and ultimately secured a 14-5, five-inning victory.

Grove City (18-14) broke open Game One with a 13-run outburst in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman first baseman Emma Covert (Chicora, Pa./Moniteau) belted a three-run homer in her first at-bat of the inning, then launched a grand slam later in the inning. Covert's three-run clout broke an 8-8 tie.

Junior center fielder Ella Krarup (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) had a career-high five hits in six at-bats while senior second baseman Erin Mulholland (Malvern, Pa./Delaware County Christian) went 4 for 6 with a double. Freshman shortstop Abby Stouffer (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) also went 4 for 6 and scored three runs.

Freshman pitcher Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Pa./Coventry) went 3 for 5 with three doubles and junior left fielder Kamryn Weissinger (Youngsville, Pa./Youngsville) also added a double and two singles. Junior third baseman Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) and sophomore catcher Kristin Tesch (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) both doubled and singled. Senior designated player Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) went 2 for 5.

Covert, Stouffer and Tesch all scored three runs. Krarup and Weissinger each drove in three runs. Grove City finished with 28 hits.

Jackson earned the pitching win by throwing 4 2/3 innings of relief. She allowed two earned runs. Junior Emily Wentworth (Potsdam, N.Y./Canton) started in the circle and yielded five runs in 2 1/3 innings.

Covert became the first Grove City player with two home runs in one game since Hannah Dietz recorded the feat April 23, 2022 against Washington & Jefferson.

Covert and Mulholland both doubled while going 3 for 4 in Game Two. Junior shortstop Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) doubled twice and scored three runs while Harris, Jackson and freshman right fielder Chelsey Freyermuth (Meadville, Pa./Cochranton) all doubled. Jackson and sophomore third baseman Lily DeMeio (Renfrew, Pa./Butler) both went 2 for 3.

Linhart drove in three runs while Jackson and Mulholland each knocked in a pair of runs. Grove City finished with 15 hits.

Jackson earned her second win of the day by pitching four innings. She struck out three while allowing one earned run and four hits. Wentworth pitched the fifth.

Earlier this week, Grove City swept Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheaders from Chatham and Allegheny. The Wolverines have won seven of their last eight games.

Grove City will host W&J at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in a conference doubleheader. Both teams are 8-8 in the conference.
