WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at defending conference champion Waynesburg University. Grove City (16-14, 8-8 PAC) dropped the opener, 1-0, but rebounded for a 5-2 win in Game Two.
Grove City jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the nightcap. Freshman left fielder
Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland), senior catcher
Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and freshman first baseman
Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) stroked consecutive doubles to ignite the inning.Â
Junior second baseman
Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) came home on Montone's hit while Harris then doubled in Montone. Jackson doubled in Harris and later scored on an error.
In the fifth inning, senior designated player
Erin Mulholland (Malvern, Pa./Delaware County Christian) singled to left, moving Harris to third. An outfield error allowed Harris to score Grove City's final run. Harris doubled twice while Linhart finished 2 for 4.
Junior pitcher
Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) carried a shutout into the sixth inning. Brodie (5-5) earned her third win of the week after allowing two earned runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Freshman pitcher
Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) secured her second save of the season by recording the final five outs. She struck out three.
Meadors threw a three-hitter in the opener, allowing an unearned run in six innings. She struck out eight batters. Montone's sixth-inning single marked Grove City's lone hit in the opener.Â
Grove City has the conference's open date Saturday. The Wolverines will visit Penn State Beaver for a non-conference twinbill in Monaca, Pa., at 1 p.m. Saturday.
