NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference games Wednesday evening at Westminster. Westminster scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the opener, 6-5, then pulled out a 6-2 win in the nightcap.
Grove City trailed 5-1 in Game One but rallied to tie the game with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman left fielder
Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) sparked the inning by belting a triple to center field and then scoring on an overthrow.Â
With two outs, senior
Erin Mulholland (Malvern, Pa./Delaware County Christian) launched a three-run pinch-hit homer to tie the game. Senior catcher
Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and freshman pitcher
Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) scored on Mulholland's blast, her first round-tripper of the season.Â
Montone gave Grove City a 1-0 lead in the third inning when her sacrifice fly scored sophomore shortstop
Rylie Eaton (Grove City, Pa./Grove City). Eaton doubled in the opener while Harris finished 2 for 4.
Jackson pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief and struck out two. She took the setback. Junior
Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) started and pitched five innings. She allowed four earned runs.Â
Grove City (11-3, 3-7 PAC) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap as Harris and freshman pitcher
Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) both struck run-scoring singles. Harris went 2 for 3 in Game Two.
Meadors and Jackson combined on a three-hitter. Meadors struck out four in five innings. She allowed three earned runs and absorbed the defeat. Jackson yielded one hit in the sixth.
Grove City returns home for a conference doubleheader Saturday against Allegheny. First pitch will be 1 p.m. at College Field. That twinbill will start a six-game homestand for the Wolverines.
