Late rallies give Grove City road sweep

ALTOONA, Pa. -- Two late-inning comebacks Thursday afternoon helped vault the Grove City College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of host Penn State Altoona in non-conference action at Stewart Athletic Field. Grove City scored twice in the top of the seventh in the opener to pull out a 2-1 victory. The Wolverines then scored six runs over the final two innings of Game Two on the way to a come-from-behind 8-5 triumph.

Grove City trailed 1-0 with two outs in the top of the seventh in Game One but sophomore shortstop Rylie Eaton (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) belted a two-run double that scored junior left fielder Ella Krarup (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) and sophomore center field Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion).

Junior pitcher Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) then retired the Lions in order in the bottom of the seventh to sew up the win. Brodie (2-2) threw a complete game, allowing one run and four hits in seven innings. She struck out three.

Brodie went 2 for 4 at the plate while Eaton finished 2 for 3.

Grove City erased a 5-2 deficit after five innings in the nightcap by erupting for four runs in the sixth. Senior catcher Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) cut the lead to 5-4 with a two-run double that plated Brodie and junior third baseman Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa./New Castle). Harris scored the tying run on a single by freshman left fielder Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland). Montone then scored the go-ahead run via a run-scoring single from junior second baseman Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana).

Grove City then extended its lead in the seventh inning. Brodie tripled in Zona, then scored on a single by freshman pitcher Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion).

Brodie and Linhart also doubled in Game Two. Harris, Meadors and Montone all went 3 for 5 while Zona finished 2 for 4. Grove City collected 17 hits in the nightcap.

Grove City trailed 3-0 before scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Krarup singled in Linhart in the fourth inning while Eaton came home on Meadors' fifth-inning single.

Meadors (4-2) earned the victory after allowing three earned runs in seven innings. She struck out three.

Winners of four straight games, Grove City will host Pitt-Bradford at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 22. That will be Grove City's 2024 home opener.
