Season opening split

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The Grove City College softball team opened the 2024 season Monday by splitting a pair of games at the Space Coast Games. Grove City opened the day with a 2-0 victory over Alma. Rose-Hulman slipped past the Wolverines in Monday's finale, 3-1.

Freshman Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) threw a four-hit shutout in the opener as she struck out seven during her seven innings in the circle. She walked one.

Meadors also drove in both runs against Alma as her two-out, two-run double brought home senior catcher Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and junior third baseman Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa./New Castle). Zona led off the inning with a bunt single while Harris reached on a force play.

Grove City forged a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth against Rose-Hulman when sophomore pinch runner Rylie Eaton (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) scored on an error. Eaton ran for senior DP Erin Mulholland (Malvern, Pa./Delaware County Christian), who opened the inning with a double.

Junior pitcher Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) fired a complete game for Grove City, striking out six batters in six innings. She yielded only five hits but took the setback.

Grove City returns to action Tuesday with another doubleheader at the Space Coast Games. Grove City faces Alma at 12:15 p.m., then squares off with Houghton at 2:30 p.m.
