GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday lifted the Grove City College baseball team to a 6-5 win over visiting La Roche (0-1) in non-conference action at Jack Behringer Field.
Senior first baseman
Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) cracked a bases-loaded infield single with two outs, bringing in junior shortstop
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) with the winning run.
Freshman left fielder
Caison Holland (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge) led off the ninth inning with a walk and senior second baseman
Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) followed with a single. Freshman catcher
Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) moved the runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Vittone then tied the game by belting a two-run double to right field.
Walks to sophomore center fielder
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and freshman pitcher
Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) loaded the bases with one out after Vittone stole third. Following a strikeout, Williams broke the 5-5 tie with his second hit of the game.
Baccari gave Grove City a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh as his two-run double scored Williams and sophomore third baseman
Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry). Baccari scored Grove City's third run on a Weber single.
Baccari finished 2 for 4 while Vittone and Williams both went 2 for 5. Williams also doubled. Junior right fielder
Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) also went 2 for 5.
Bevin earned the pitching win after allowing two earned runs in four innings. He struck out six men. Senior
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) started and yielded one run in five innings. Guidas allowed one hit while striking out five batters.
Grove City will begin its eight-game trip to central Florida by facing Carthage at 1:15 p.m. Saturday in Auburndale, Fla. The Wolverines will then play Houghton at 4:30 p.m.
