Grove City blanks W&J in tourney opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team limited sixth-seeded Washington & Jefferson to one shot on goal Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines rolled to a 4-0 home win over W&J in the quarterfinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Don Lyle Field.

Sophomore forward Ryan Higgs (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) gave third-seeded Grove City a 1-0 lead late in the first half while junior forward Jed Hart (Fayetteville, N.C./Urbana, Md.), junior defender Camden Thomas (North Lima, Ohio/South Range) and senior Will Rybka (Peninsula, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) sealed the win with second half goals.

Higgs broke a scoreless tie by scoring with 90 seconds in the first half. It is his first goal of 2024 and his first collegiate game-winner. Sophomores Ryan Merrick (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) and Carlo Denis (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) both assisted the Higgs goal.

Hart doubled the lead with an unassisted goal at 67:59. Thomas and Rybka then scored in a 15-second span to clinch the win. Thomas scored at 84:16 after receiving an assist from sophomore forward Noah Gray (Glen Mills, Pa./The Christian Academy).

Rybka scored his first goal of 2024 15 seconds later. Denis and junior Daniel Sharp (Zagreb, Croatia/XV Gymnasium) assisted Rybka's goal.

Grove City (11-3-3) outshot W&J, 21-4, including an 8-1 edge in shots on goal. The Wolverines had 10 corner kicks while W&J had two corners.

Junior goalkeeper Teddy Almeter (Monroeville, Pa./Serra) made one save to preserve the shutout.

Grove City will now visit No. 2 Geneva in the tournament semifinals. That match will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Beaver Falls.
