Merrick scores twice as Grove City doubles up SVC

LATROBE, Pa. -- Senior forward Natalie Merrick (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) scored twice in the second half while senior forward Emma Herrmann (Hilton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) and sophomore midfielder Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) also scored goals Wednesday night to help lead the Grove City College women's soccer team to a 4-2 road victory over Saint Vincent in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at UPMC Field.

Stevenson gave Grove City a 1-0 lead at 11:33 when she scored her sixth goal of the 2024 season. Senior forward Britta Lagerquist (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) assisted Stevenson's goal. 

Grove City led 1-0 at halftime before doubling the lead at 61:38 when Merrick scored the first of her two goals. 

Saint Vincent (12-3-1, 6-2 PAC) cut the lead to 2-1 when Tanisha Grewal scored an unassisted goal at 63:03. However, Merrick answered with the eventual game-winner at 71:31 after she received an assist from junior midfielder Natalie Giunta (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield). 

Grewal again trimmed the lead by scoring on a penalty kick at 76:46. However, Herrmann closed out the win at 87:26 by scoring her team-leading 18th goal of the season. 

Grove City (10-3-2, 7-0-1) outshot the Bearcats, 18-13, although Saint Vincent owned a 9-8 edge in shots on goal. Grove City had six corner kicks and Saint Vincent tallied a pair of corner kicks. 

Senior goalkeeper Courtney Lisman (Mars, Pa./Mars) stopped seven shots to earn the win for Grove City. 

Merrick and Stevenson are tied for second on the team with six goals each. Both players have 13 points, also good for second on the squad. Merrick has at least one point in six of her last eight matches.

The Wolverines will visit conference foe Washington & Jefferson at 1 p.m. Saturday.
