Grove City doubles up Westminster

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Four Grove City College men's soccer players scored Friday night to lift the Wolverines to a 4-2 win over visiting Westminster (4-6-2, 1-4) in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Don Lyle Field. 

Junior midfielder Camden Thomas (North Lima, Ohio/South Range) scored the eventual game-winner and also assisted an insurance goal from sophomore forward Ryan Merrick (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian). 

Sophomore defender Jake Kimmich (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and sophomore midfielder Noah Gray (Glen Mills, Pa./The Christian Academy) also scored in Friday night's victory. 

Kimmich's unassisted goal 2:56 into the game gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. Gray boosted the lead at the 28:00 mark with his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Junior forward Daniel Sharp (Zagreb, Croatia/XV Gymnasium) assisted Gray's goal.

Westminster halved the lead at 39:35 on a Santiago Fernandez goal. However, Thomas answered with an unassisted goal at 43:05 to reclaim Grove City's two-goal lead. It is Thomas's first goal of 2024. 

Westminster whittled the lead to 3-2 at 58:06 on a Lucas Toohey unassisted goal. Merrick sealed the win with his second goal of the season, which came at 71:34. 

Grove City (7-2-2, 4-1) doubled up Westminster in shots, 18-9. Grove City had a dozen shots on goal while Westminster put seven shots on net. The Wolverines recorded eight corner kicks and Westminster had six corners. 

Junior goalkeeper Teddy Almeter (Monroeville, Pa./Serra) secured his 15th career win by making five saves. 

The Wolverines will travel to Franciscan at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in conference play.
