Grove City sweeps Bethany

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team posted 26 total runs and 30 total hits Saturday afternoon on the way to a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader of sweep of visiting Bethany at Jack Behringer Field. The Wolverines won the opener, 14-1, then picked up a 12-2 triumph in the nightcap. The conference's 10-run mercy rule stopped both tilts in the seventh inning.

Grove City (21-7, 8-2 PAC) broke open Game One with a nine-run outburst in the fifth inning. Junior first baseman Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) and sophomore left fielder Shane Cato (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) ignited the rally with back-to-back run-scoring singles. Junior second baseman Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) then tripled in Williams and Cato to give Grove City a 9-1 lead.

Baccari and sophomore shortstop Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) both scored on wild pitches, extending the lead to 11-1. Sophomore right fielder Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) singled in freshman center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) while senior catcher C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) followed with a double that plated sophomore third baseman Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls). Minnich scored on Cato's fielder's choice, capping the inning.

Baccari finished 3 for 3 with three runs batted in. Cato went 2 for 3 and scored three runs while Minnich also went 2 for 3. Kilbane and Sampson finished 2 for 4. Vittone added a triple and two runs scored.

Sophomore pitcher David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler) threw a seven-inning complete game to earn the win. Leslie (4-2) struck out seven and allowed three hits. He has a 1.82 ERA over his last five starts.

Saylor's three-run homer in the first gave Grove City a quick 3-0 lead. The Wolverines added five more runs in the second inning as Kilbane and Saylor both had run-scoring doubles while Minnich singled in Sampson. Minnich scored on a wild pitch while Saylor scored on a double play.

Bethany (14-14, 2-8 PAC) trimmed the lead to 8-2 with single runs in the third and fourth innings. Grove City scored twice each in the sixth and seventh innings to sew up the win, though. Saylor's sixth-inning single scored Sampson while Williams drove in Kilbane with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

Sampson tripled in Vittone in the seventh, then scored on Kilbane's fourth hit of the game.

Kilbane finished 4 for 4. Saylor went 3 for 4 while Sampson finished 2 for 4 and scored four runs. Leslie, Grove City's Game Two DH, doubled and singled.

Senior pitcher Robby Randolph (Cranberry Township, Pa./North Catholic) earned his first collegiate win by pitching 3 2/3 innings of relief. He struck out three while allowing one run. Sophomore pitcher Isaiah Zuchowski (Barneveld, N.Y./Poland) made his first start of the season and allowed one earned run in 2 1/3 innings. He fanned two. Senior Noah Cyphert (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) pitched a perfect seventh in his collegiate pitching debut. Cyphert fanned one.

Grove City will visit Saint Vincent (8-4 PAC) for a conference doubleheader Tuesday at 1 p.m. The Wolverines have won five straight games while Saint Vincent will carry an eight-game win streak into Tuesday's twinbill.
