AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team churned out seven extra-base hits Tuesday afternoon on the way to an 11-4 victory over Trine in non-conference action at Lake Myrtle Field.
Sophomore second baseman
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) paced Grove City's 17-hit attack by going 4 for 6 with a home run. Sophomore DH
Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) tripled as part of a 2-for-4 outing while junior shortstop
Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) also tripled.
Freshman center fielder
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) went 3 for 5 with a double. Senior right fielder
Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour), sophomore third baseman
Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) and sophomore left fielder
Nico Rodriguez (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) also doubled for Grove City (6-3 overall).
Grove City trailed 4-1 after two innings but tied the game by scoring single runs in three successive innings. Vittone's solo homer in the third helped spark the comeback. In the fourth, junior first baseman
Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) drove in Minnich with a sacrifice fly, cutting the lead to 4-3. Kilbane singled home Sampson in the fifth to tie the game.
Grove City pulled ahead in the seventh as Kilbane's two-run double scored Rodriguez and Vittone. Kilbane later scored on Williams's second sacrifice fly of the game. Williams went 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored.
In the ninth, pinch hitter Tambellini roped a two-run double that scored Williams and sophomore third baseman
Shane Cato (New Castle, Pa./Shenango). Baccari scored on a wild pitch and Tambellini then scored on a Vittone single.
Sophomore
Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada) earned the pitching win after striking out six men in seven innings. He allowed three earned runs and walked two. Kilbane pitched a perfect eighth inning. Senior reliever
Robby Randolph (Cranberry Township, Pa./North Catholic) closed out Tuesday's win with a scoreless ninth inning.
Now 4-0 on its Florida trip, Grove City will face St. John Fisher at 1 p.m. Wednesday. St. John Fisher competed in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament in each of the last two seasons.
