7 straight wins for Grove City

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- Junior pitcher Christian Hoffmann (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) fired a career-best six innings Friday afternoon in his first collegiate start to help the Grove City College baseball team pull out a 3-2 victory over Ohio power Mount Union at Northeast Regional Park. Grove City (9-3 overall) improved to 7-0 on its Spring Break trip to central Florida.

Hoffmann struck out four, allowed one run and four hits to secure his first collegiate win. Sophomore David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler) earned a three-inning save, striking out three men in his three innings.

Grove City trailed 1-0 after five innings but surged ahead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior first baseman Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) tied the game by singling in sophomore second baseman Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian).

The Wolverines then surged ahead as sophomore third baseman Shane Cato (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) laced a single to right field that scored freshman center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). An error on the play allowed Williams to score Grove City's third run of the inning. Cato went 2 for 3 to pace the Wolverines.

Grove City concludes its trip Saturday by facing St. Joseph's (Maine) at 9:30 a.m. in Lakeland, Fla.
