GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Three Grove City College men's basketball players scored in double figures Wednesday night at Thiel but the Wolverines dropped an 81-74 road decision in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia.
Sophomore guard
Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) fired in a team-high 20 points for Grove City (10-14, 8-11 PAC) while sophomore
Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell) drained four three-pointers as part of a 14-point outing. Sophomore forward
Ben Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) added 11 points and a team-leading seven rebounds.
Grove City trailed 38-36 at halftime but quickly grabbed the lead on consecutive Yarberough field goals. Later, a Bock layup broke a 45-45 tie with 14:10 left.
However, Thiel took the lead for good with a 12-2 run over the next five minutes. Thiel led by as many as nine, 66-57, but Cano and freshman guard
Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) scored on successive possessions to cut Thiel's lead to five with five minutes remaining.
Yarberough's three-pointer cut the lead to 77-74 with 20 seconds remaining. Thiel sealed the win by going 4 for 6 at the foul line in the closing moments.
Christenson added nine points for Grove City, which finished the game 28 of 67 (42 percent) from the field. Thiel converted 30 of its 61 field goal attempts (49 percent). Grove City held a 42-36 edge on the glass.
Yarberough, freshman forward
David Olinger (Glenside, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian) and sophomore forward
John Ward (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) all had three assists. Grove City finished with 14 turnovers. Thiel (11-11, 10-9) had nine turnovers.
Elijah Harden led Thiel with 29 points.
Grove City will conclude the regular season Saturday at Washington & Jefferson. The game will tip off at 3 p.m. Grove City will also visit W&J next Tuesday, February 21, in the quarterfinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. W&J has clinched the top seed while Grove City will be the No. 8 entry.
