Comeback falls short

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- After dropping the first two sets Tuesday night at Allegheny in the quarterfinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, the Grove City College women's volleyball team rallied from a late deficit in the third set to earn a 25-22 victory. In the fourth set, the Wolverines cut Allegheny's 18-8 lead down to 22-18. But Allegheny sewed up the win by taking the pivotal fourth set, 25-19.

Third-seeded Allegheny advances to Thursday's semifinals with its 25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19 win. Grove City concludes the season with a 19-11 overall record.

Senior Eloise Sutter (Lebanon, Ohio/Mars Hill) led sixth-seeded Grove City with 11 kills. Senior Anna DeGraaf (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and freshman Alexis Standford (Walkersville, Md./New Life Christian) both recorded nine kills.

Junior setter Kennedy Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) accumulated 20 assists while sophomore Brooklyn Wirebaugh (Medina, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) added a dozen assists. Freshman Alayna Dorst (Middletown, Del./Middletown) served three aces and Kerr had two aces.

DeGraaf and Standford both had four blocks to lead the Grove City defense. Senior Grace Kim (Sanford, N.C./Harnett Warriors) totaled 28 digs while senior Gabby Lucas (Butler, Pa./Butler) recorded 26 digs. Dorst delivered 13 digs and Kerr added 12 digs. 

Allegheny advances to face No. 2 Bethany in Thursday's semifinals. Tuesday's meeting marked the first time that Grove City and Allegheny have met in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament.

Grove City will lose DeGraaf, Kim, Lucas, Sutter and senior Erin Baldwin (Chicago, Ill./Christian Liberty) to graduation.
