GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory Wednesday night over visiting Waynesburg (9-7-2) at Don Lyle Field in the semifinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.
Wednesday's win sends the top-seeded Wolverines (13-4-1) into Saturday afternoon's championship match, where Grove City will host No. 6 seed Franciscan at 1 p.m. The Barons topped No. 2 Westminster, 2-1, in Wednesday's other tournament semifinal.
Grove City broke a 1-1 tie at 71:57 when junior forward
Emma Herrmann (Hilton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) scored the game-winner after receiving a feed from sophomore
Annie Vannoy (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley). It is Herrmann's sixth game-winning goal and her conference-leading 18th goal of the season.
The Wolverines then sealed the win at the 80:25 mark when freshman midfielder
Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) blasted her fourth goal of the season into the net. Herrmann assisted Stevenson's insurance goal.
Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead 1:45 into the match when Herrmann scored from close range. Junior forward
Britta Lagerquist (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) assisted the goal.
Waynesburg's Kate James tied the match 2:16 into the second half with an unassisted goal.
Junior goalkeeper
Courtney Lisman (Mars, Pa./Mars) made seven saves to earn the win. It is her 13th of the season and the 34th victory of her career. She is now tied for first on Grove City's career goalkeeping wins list. Katy Turman (1999-2002) also recorded 34 wins.
Fifth-seeded Waynesburg out-shot Grove City, 20-19. The Wolverines held a 13-8 edge in shots on goal. Waynesburg netted seven corner kicks while Grove City had five corner kicks.Â
Herrmann's 18 goals this year are tied for No. 2 on Grove City's single-season list. Hannah Yang scored 18 goals in 2010. Meg Tilley set the single-season record with 25 goals in 2002. Herrmann's 39 points are the most by a Grove City player since Yang had 40 points in 2010. The 39 points rank Herrmann sixth on Grove City's single-season leaderboard.
Lagerquist leads the team with eight assists. She is tied for ninth on Grove City's single-season assist list.Â
Saturday's title match will be the second time that Grove City has hosted Franciscan this season. The teams played to a 3-3 draw September 23 at Don Lyle Field. Grove City led 3-0 at halftime but the Barons rallied to forge a tie.Â
Grove City aims for its first conference title since 2019. Saturday's winner will also earn the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
