OT win sends Grove City into semis

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior forward Hunter Hardin (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Freeport) headed in a corner kick in the first overtime Saturday evening to help lift the Grove City College men's soccer team to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Allegheny in the quarterfinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Don Lyle Field.

The No. 3 seed Wolverines (8-5-5) advance to the semifinals and will face No. 2 Franciscan at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Steubenville.

Grove City took the lead with 1:55 remaining in the first of the two 10-minute overtime periods. Junior midfielder John-Luc Harbour (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) sent a corner kick into the goal area and Hardin followed by heading the ball into the net for his fourth goal of the season. It is Hardin's second game-winning goal of the season and the ninth of his career.

Allegheny had a chance to tie the match in the second overtime but senior defender Matt Kimmich (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) cleared an on-target shot off the line to preserve the 2-1 lead with seven minutes left.

Sixth-seeded Allegheny took a 1-0 lead at 17:54 on Aidan Dyga's unassisted goal. Grove City forged a 1-1 tie eight minutes later as sophomore midfielder Owen Zimmerman (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) registered his third goal of 2023. Harbour also assisted that goal.

Harbour now has a team-leading four assists this season.

Grove City owned a 20-10 advantage in total shots. The Wolverines had eight shots on goal while Allegheny recorded six shots on goal. The Wolverines owned a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Teddy Almeter (Monroeville, Pa./Serra) made three saves to earn the win, his seventh of the season.

Franciscan (11-4-3 overall) earned the No. 2 seed and a bye to the semifinal round with a 6-1-3 league record. The lone loss came September 23 at Grove City as the Wolverines earned a 3-1 victory at Don Lyle Field. The Barons are the defending conference champion.
