Monday Night Magic

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team rallied from a 16-point deficit in the second half to pull out a 60-59 victory Monday night over visiting Chatham (8-5, 5-4 PAC) in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena. 

Junior forward Kat Goetz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) scored from the block with six seconds left to give Grove City a 60-59 lead. The Wolverines then forced a turnover on Chatham's final possession of the game to help seal the victory.

Grove City (8-6, 8-1 PAC) trailed 46-30 with 2:49 left in the third quarter but the Wolverines scored the final six points of the period. Goetz scored back-to-back field goals and senior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) scored a fast-break layup with four seconds left, trimming the lead to 46-36. 

Chatham held a 53-45 lead with five minutes left in regulation but Kallock and sophomore guard Nevaeh Ewing (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) both buried three-pointers to spark Grove City's final surge.

Goetz sank a jumper in the lane with 52 seconds remaining to give Grove City a 57-56 lead, the Wolverines' first lead since their 12-10 margin at the end of the first quarter. 

After Kallock split a pair of free throws, Chatham's Hannah Chenault sank a three-pointer with 23 seconds left, giving Chatham its final lead, 59-58.

Goetz led Grove City with 18 points. Kallock added 10. Freshman guard Emily Garvin (Northumberland, Pa./Northumberland Christian) added eight points and classmate Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) chipped in seven points. 

Grove City shot 10 of 18 (56 percent) from the field in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines finished the game 22 of 61 (36 percent) on field goals. Chatham hit 21 of 62 (34 percent) attempts. The Wolverines held Chatham to a 4-of-16 performance in the fourth quarter. Chatham hit 11 of its 36 three-point attempts.

The Wolverines earned a 53-35 edge on the glass. Sophomore center Kiley Ingram (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) matched a career high with 10 rebounds. Senior center Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) grabbed eight rebounds and sophomore guard Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) collected seven rebounds.

Polczynski also had six assists and four steals. Ingram added three assists. 

Eighteen of Grove City's 27 turnovers came in the first half. Chatham finished with 21 turnovers. 

Chatham led 33-21 at halftime. Chenault led Chatham with 15 points. 

Grove City is now 4-0 in 2023. The Wolverines have the open date in the conference schedule Wednesday night. Grove City will host league leader Washington & Jefferson (9-0 PAC) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
