GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A strong fourth quarter performance helped lift the Grove City College womens's basketball team to a 71-51 victory Saturday afternoon over visiting Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena. Grove City led 49-44 after three quarters, then shot 9 of 18 from the field in the final 10 minutes to break open the game.
Four Grove City players scored in double figures, led by junior forward
Kat Goetz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) with 15 points. Senior guard
Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) posted 13 points while sophomore guard
Jaden Davinsizer (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) added 11 points. Sophomore forward
Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) chipped in 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Grove City opened the fourth quarter on an 18-4 run, which started when sophomore guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) hit a pair of free throws. Following a Kallock jumper, junior center
Katie Baller (Lone Tree, Colo./Valor Christian) scored on a fast break. Baller then added a three-point play that pushed Grove City's lead to 58-46 with 7:38 left.
Another Baller jumper and Davinsizer's third three-pointer of the game extended the Wolverines' lead to 63-48. Fast-break baskets by Davinsizer and sophomore forward
Hayley Fenchel (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) capped the outburst.
Grove City trailed by as many as nine points, 26-17, in the first half and faced a 34-26 margin with 3:47 left in the second quarter. The Wolverines surged ahead by halftime with an 11-2 run, however. Goetz ignited the blitz with a layup and Kallock then followed with consecutive three-pointers. Kallock's two free throws with 32 seconds left gave Grove City a 37-36 halftime lead.
Grove City finished the game 28 of 71 (38 percent) from the field. Westminster sank 15 of 52 (29 percent) shots. The Titans went 4 for 18 (22 percent) in the second half.
Baller and sophomore center
Kiley Ingram (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) both grabbed eight rebounds for Grove City (11-8, 11-3 PAC). Westminster held a 52-42 edge on the glass.
Polczynski dished out four assists and Kallock assisted three field goals. Ingram recorded four steals while sophomore guard
Ashley Durig (Washington, Pa./Trinity) added three steals. Grove City forced 23 turnovers, including 17 in the second half. The Wolverines turned over the ball 11 times.
Natalie Murrio led Westminster with 17 points. Westminster (11-8, 7-7 PAC) led 19-17 after the first quarter.
Winners of three straight, Grove City hosts Bethany at 6 p.m. Wednesday in conference action.
