Extra! Extra! Grove City tops W&J in 10

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior right fielder Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) drove in the tying run and then scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning Wednesday afternoon on a single by senior first baseman Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) to help the Grove City College baseball team earn a 7-6 win over visiting Washington & Jefferson (29-8, 22-2 PAC) in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Jack Behringer Field.

Grove City trailed 6-5 in the 10th inning but senior left fielder Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored on Tambellini's base hit.

Freshman center fielder Nico Rodriguez (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) and sophomore third baseman Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) loaded the bases with two outs, setting up Hamilton's game-winning hit.

Hamilton finished 2 for 6 while Tambellini went 2 for 5. Freshman catcher Sam DiStefano (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) singled twice while Rodriguez added a double.

Grove City trailed 4-1 in the seventh inning before forging a 4-4 tie. Rodriguez doubled in DiStefano and freshman Shane Cato (New Castle, Pa./Shenango), cutting the lead to 4-3. Tambellini scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

Sophomore shortstop Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) put Grove City ahead in the eighth inning, 5-4, when he scored from second base on a wild pitch. Baccari's fielder's choice in the first inning drove in freshman second baseman Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) with Grove City's first run.

Cato earned the win in relief by pitching 1 2/3 innings. He struck out one and allowed one run. Senior pitcher D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) struck out a season-high eight batters in his seven innings. He allowed four runs and four hits. Senior reliever Robby Randolph (Cranberry Township, Pa./North Catholic) pitched 1 1/3 innings and yielded a run.

Wednesday's win marked Grove City's third win this season over a team ranked in the NCAA Division III Region VII rankings. The Wolverines also own wins over Mount Union and Allegheny in non-conference play. W&J is ranked fifth in the regional rankings, which came out Wednesday afternoon.

Grove City will host Saint Vincent (19-5 PAC) in a conference doubleheader Thursday at 1 p.m.
