WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team improved to 7-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by sweeping a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Washington & Jefferson. Grove City rolled to an 8-1 win in Game One at Trinity Middle School, then belted four home runs in a 9-2 Game Two triumph.
In Game One, sophomore pitcher
Kaitlyn Constantino (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) struck out eight batters and allowed only four hits and no earned runs to earn the complete game victory.
Offensively, Constantino went 2 for 4 to help lead Grove City's 10-hit attack. Her two-run single in the top of the first highlighted Grove City's four-run outburst. Senior right fielder
Hannah Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) also had a run-scoring single in the opening inning.
The Wolverines then added a pair of runs in the fourth inning when freshman second baseman
Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) walked with the bases loaded and junior DP
Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley) later scored on a single from senior first baseman
Haley Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).
Constantino and
Hannah Dietz scored on an error in the seventh inning, closing the scoring.
Sophomore catcher
Emily Smyth (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) doubled and singled for Grove City while Linhart finished 2 for 3.
Hannah Dietz launched a pair of home runs in the nightcap while Smyth and sophomore third baseman
Maralee Caldana (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) also homered in the victory. Smyth added a double while going 2 for 4.
Hannah Dietz went 3 for 4.
Grove City seized a 3-0 lead in the second inning of Game Two as freshman pinch runner
Ella Krarup (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) scored on an error, Dawson drove in sophomore catcher
Lauren Harris (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) with a sacrifice fly and Smyth doubled in senior center fielder
Morgan Prouty (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley).
Hannah Dietz cracked a two-run homer in the third, pushing the lead to 5-0. W&J trimmed the lead to 5-2 but Grove City sealed the win with four runs in the top of the seventh. Smyth opened the scoring with a solo homer while Caldana's clout also scored Linhart.
Hannah Dietz followed Caldana with a solo home run, her program-record sixth round-tripper of the season. Dietz leads the conference with six home runs and extended her Grove City career record to 19 home runs. She also became Grove City's career leader with 91 runs batted in.
Dawson earned the win by allowing two runs in six innings. She allowed five hits and walked one. Senior
Kaitlyn Dittrich (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) struck out two batters in a perfect seventh.
The Wolverines (13-15 overall) will host Chatham at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in a conference doubleheader at College Field.
