Grove City sweeps Chatham in home finale

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team closed its regular season home schedule Thursday afternoon by sweeping a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader from visiting Chatham at College Field. Grove City (15-15, 9-7 PAC) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 5-4 win in the opener. Grove City then rallied from an early deficit to secure a 7-3 victory in the nightcap.

Freshman second baseman Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) broke a 4-4 tie in Game One by doubling in junior pinch runner Clare Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Indian River) with the game-winning run. Moran ran for junior Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley), who singled in senior shortstop Lexi Buck (Akron, Ohio/Lake Center Christian). Buck started the comeback with a one-out double down the left field line.

Chatham tied the game 3-3 in the top of the sixth, then inched ahead in the top of the seventh. Grove City took its 3-2 lead in the first inning as Linhart scored on a double from sophomore catcher Emily Smyth (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township), senior first baseman Haley Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) singled in freshman pinch runner Ella Krarup (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) and sophomore third baseman Maralee Caldana (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) doubled in Dietz.

Buck finished 2 for 3 while Linhart went 2 for 4.

Sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Constantino (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) earned the victory by throwing her team-leading eighth complete game of the season. She struck out six and walked one in seven innings. Constantino improved to 6-5.

Dawson belted a solo homer in Game Two while senior right fielder Hannah Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and sophomore left fielder Lauren McNeil (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) eached launched two-run home runs in the victory.

McNeil's two-run blast in the bottom of the second tied the game 2-2. Dietz's round-tripper put Grove City ahead 4-3 in the fourth inning. Dawson pushed the lead to 5-3 with her home run in the fifth.

Grove City added two more runs in the fifth as Hannah Dietz singled home Haley Dietz and freshman pinch runner Kamryn Weissinger (Youngsville, Pa./Youngsville).

Dawson and Buck both went 2 for 3 in the nightcap while Hannah Dietz finished 2 for 4.

Dawson earned the win in the circle after allowing one earned run in six innings. She struck out two and walked one. Senior Kaitlyn Dittrich (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) pitched a perfect seventh in relief. Dittrich made her league-leading 11th relief appearance of the season.

Hannah Dietz leads the league with seven home runs. Thursday's home run extended her own single-season program record. She also has a Grove City-record 20 career home runs and a program-best 95 career runs batted in.

Grove City will close the regular season Saturday at conference rival Bethany. That doubleheader, along with Friday and Saturday's results around the league will determine Grove City's positioning for next week's conference tournament.
