Late rallies foil Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon by dropping both ends of a home doubleheader with Saint Vincent at College Field. Saint Vincent (12-0, 2-0 PAC) pulled out a 5-4 win in the opener, then scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim a 7-3 win in Game Two.

Grove City (6-8, 0-2) grabbed the lead in the opener by scoring four runs in the bottom of the third. Junior Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley) opened the scoring by driving in sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Constantino (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) with a bases-loaded single.

Sophomore catcher Emily Smyth (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) then belted a three-run double that scored Dawson, senior shortstop Lexi Buck (Akron, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) and sophomore left fielder Lauren McNeil (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

Dawson also tripled for Grove City. Constantino and senior center fielder Morgan Prouty (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) both doubled.

Constantino threw a complete game, allowing four earned runs in seven innings. She struck out two and yielded six hits.

In Game Two, Grove City trailed 2-0 entering the fifth inning but charged ahead with a three-run rally. Senior right fielder Hannah Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) tied the game by lining a two-run home run to right-center field.

Dawson's fielder's choice later in the inning scored sophomore catcher Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), putting Grove City up 3-2.

Saint Vincent tied the game in the top of the seventh and then reclaimed the lead on Abbey Ginter's grand slam.

Sophomore third baseman Maralee Caldana (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) doubled for the Wolverines, who finished with six hits in the nightcap.
