Grove City rallies for split

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball rallied for a doubleheader split Tuesday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Waynesburg University. Grove City, the home team for both games, scored the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning in Game Two, then pulled out a 7-6 victory in the bottom of the seventh. Waynesburg University won Game One, 11-2.

Senior second baseman Cara Polese (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest) laced a single to left in the bottom of the seventh to drive in senior center fielder Morgan Prouty (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) with the game-winning run. Prouty reached on an error and then moved to third when senior shortstop Lexi Buck (Akron, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) singled.

Grove City trailed 4-1 in the second inning but trimmed the lead to 4-3 as Prouty scored on a groundout by junior pitcher Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) and Buck came home when sophomore catcher Emily Smith (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) singled.

The Wolverines then tied the game 5-5 in the third inning when sophomore third baseman Maralee Caldana (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) blasted a two-run home run, her second clout of the season.

Waynesburg (18-7, 7-3 PAC) reclaimed a 6-5 lead but Grove City again tied the game when freshman DP Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) and senior right fielder Hannah Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) belted consecutive two-out doubles.

Buck, Dietz and Smyth all went 2 for 3 while senior first baseman Hannah Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) added two hits. Linhart went 2 for 4 to help fuel Grove City's 13-hit attack.

Dawson earned the pitching win by allowing four earned runs in seven innings. She struck out four and allowed six hits.

Grove City (11-13, 5-5 PAC) took a 2-1 lead in the second inning of Game One as Caldana scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore left fielder Lauren McNeil (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and Buck singled in Linhart.

Waynesburg University scored twice in the top of the third inning to reclaim the lead, then broke open the game with eight runs in the fourth inning.

Sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Constantino (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) pitched 3 2/3 innings and took the setback for the Wolverines. Senior Kaitlyn Dittrich (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. She struck out two and walked one.

Grove City will visit Westminster for a conference doubleheader Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in New Wilmington.
