No. 11 JCU edges Grove City, 12-10

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's lacrosse team dropped a 12-10 home decision Wednesday night to 11th-ranked John Carroll (4-0) in non-conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field. Grove City trailed 12-5 after three quarters before surging back in the final 15 minutes.

Freshman attack Matt Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) sparked the comeback by scoring an unassisted goal with 10:39 left. Junior attack James Petrolle (Damascus, Md./Damascus) cut the lead to 12-7 with an unassisted goal at the 7:30 mark. 

Freshman midfielder Alec Jones (Chesterfield, N.J./Notre Dame) fired in his first goal of the season with 4:37 left while senior Grant Evans (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) scored 36 seconds later. Petrolle scored with 1:23 left via an assist from senior midfielder Michael La Forte (Waterford, Conn./Waterford). John Carroll held off the Wolverines over the final 83 seconds, however.

Senior midfielder Brett Gladstone (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) paced Grove City with three goals. La Forte and sophomore midfielder Jack Atwood (Hudson, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) also scored. 

Evans won 18 of 26 faceoffs and led Grove City with 12 ground balls. La Forte and senior midfielder Jed Speers (Medina, Ohio/Medina) each recorded five ground balls. Junior David Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) picked up four ground balls. 

Gladstone, Kraus and sophomore midfielder Jack Carpenter (Newtown, Conn./St. Joseph) all caused two turnovers. Each team turned over possession 18 times. 

Grove City outshot John Carroll, 45-35, including a 21-1 edge in the fourth quarter. Grove City had 24 shots on goal and JCU had 17. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Petit (Pensacola, Fla./West Florida High School of Advanced Technology) made three saves in the first half. Senior R.J. Miller (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) made two saves in the final 30 minutes.

The Wolverines (2-4) will visit Messiah in non-conference play Saturday at 12 p.m.
