Grove City finishes 6-2 in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team capped its eight-game stint in central Florida by earning wins Friday and Saturday at the RussMatt Invitational. Grove City earned an 11-4 win Friday afternoon over Calvin, then closed the week Saturday morning with a 5-4 victory over Mount Union. Grove City concluded the trip with a 6-2 record and now owns a 7-3 overall record.

Grove City trailed Calvin in the fifth inning, 4-2, before charging ahead. The Wolverines tied the game in the fifth as senior left fielder Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) doubled in junior right fielder Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) and freshman second baseman Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield).

Clary scored the go-ahead run in Grove City's five-run seventh inning when freshman DH Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) doubled him home. Saylor scored Grove City's sixth run on a groundout by senior first baseman Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.). Freshman center fielder Nico Rodriguez (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) singled home Kilbane, then later scored on a wild pitch.

Sophomore shortstop Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) capped the five-run inning by doubling in freshman third baseman Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian). In the ninth, Hamilton and Williams both scored on a wild pitch.

Kilbane also tripled for Grove City. Baccari, Clary and Williams each had two hits. Grove City finished with 13 hits.

Sophomore pitcher Nate Hamel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) threw a complete game for the Wolverines, allowing three earned runs in nine innings. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Saylor paced Grove City's 12-hit attack against Mount Union by going 4 for 4 with two home runs, a double, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Tambellini went 2 for 4 while freshman second baseman Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) doubled and singled. Hamilton and Rodriguez also doubled for the Wolverines.

Saylor hit solo homers in the first and fifth innings. In the seventh, he doubled in Minnich to tie the game 3-3. Rodriguez then put Grove City ahead by doubling in Saylor. Baccari pushed the lead to 5-3 by driving in Rodriguez with a single.

Senior pitcher Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) earned the win by pitching eight innings. He allowed three earned runs and struck out five batters. Freshman Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada) pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his third save of the week.

Grove City will open its home schedule Thursday at 3 p.m. against Allegheny in non-conference action at Jack Behringer Field.
