CRESSON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team's six-game winning streak ended Monday afternoon as the Wolverines dropped a 7-6 decision at Mount Aloysius in non-conference action. Grove City (9-4) rallied from a 5-1 deficit to take a 6-5 lead in the eighth inning. However, Mount Aloysius reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Freshman second baseman
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) paced Grove City's 13-hit attack by going 3 for 4 with a pair of home runs and four runs batted in. His solo homer in the third inning gave Grove City a 1-0 lead. He sparked Grove City's comeback in the seventh by belting a two-run home run in the seventh inning.
Following Vittone's second round-tripper, senior first baseman
Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) cut the deficit to 5-4 by singling home senior left fielder
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian).
Grove City took the lead by scoring twice in the top of the eighth. Sophomore shortstop
Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) squeezed home freshman third baseman
Shane Cato (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) with the tying run. Vittone put Grove City ahead by singling in junior right fielder
Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour).
Clary went 2 for 5 while Cato, junior catcher
C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and sophomore third baseman
Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) all doubled. All nine offensive starters had at least one hit for Grove City, as did defensive replacement Cato.
Sophomore pitcher
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) started and allowed one earned run in three innings. He struck out three. Senior
Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) yielded two unearned runs in two innings of relief. Freshman
Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada) took the setback after giving up two runs in three innings.
Grove City will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play Friday at Geneva. First pitch in Beaver Falls will be 3:30 p.m.
