Grove City sweeps northern opener

LEMONT FURNACE, Pa. -- A pair of complete game pitching performances helped lift the Grove City College softball team to a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at Penn State Fayette. The Wolverines won the opener in five innings, 9-1, then picked up a 9-3 triumph in Game Two.

Grove City, which opened the northern portion of its 2022 schedule Saturday, has now won four straight games.

In Game One, Sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Constantino struck out 10 batters in her five innings in the circle. She allowed one run and three hits, earning the win. Junior Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley) struck out eight hitters over seven innings in Game Two to secure the victory.

Sophomore catcher Emily Smyth (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) doubled, singled and knocked in a pair of runs in the opener to help pace the Grove City offense. Dawson also went 2 for 4 while senior second baseman Cara Polese (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest) drove in three runs. Sophomore left fielder Lauren McNeil (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) scored twice.

Grove City took a 2-0 lead in the first as Smyth doubled in Dawson and then later scored on a wild pitch. In the third, sophomore third baseman Maralee Caldana (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) singled in senior first baseman Haley Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton). Polese's three-run single gave the Wolverines a 6-1 lead.

One inning later, Dietz singled home senior shortstop Lexi Buck (Akron, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) to push the lead to 7-1. Smyth singled home Dietz later in the inning. Buck's fifth-inning sacrifice fly brought home McNeil.

Senior right fielder Hannah Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) went 3 for 5 with a two-run homer and three runs batted in to help lead Grove City's 13-hit attack in the nightcap. Dawson doubled as part of a 3-for-5 effort while Haley Dietz and Smyth also doubled.

Grove City led 3-0 after three innings and broke open the game with a three-run fourth frame. Smyth doubled in Haley Dietz and then came home on Hannah Dietz's two-run homer.

Grove City added three more runs in the sixth. Freshman pinch runner Ella Krarup (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) scored on a wild pitch, Hannah Dietz scored on a groundout by freshman Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) and junior Clare Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Indian River) came home on a single by freshman outfielder Madison Palivoda (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan).

The Wolverines will visit Mount Aloysius at 3 p.m. Wednesday in non-conference action.
