DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened its spring trip to Florida with victories Friday and Saturday at the RussMatt Invitational. Friday, the Wolverines earned a 5-0 victory over Northern Vermont in the opener. Grove City then rallied for a 9-5 win Saturday over Bates (Maine).
Sophomore pitcher
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) fired seven shutout innings Friday to earn the win for Grove City. Guidas allowed five hits, no walks and struck out a pair in his first start of the season. Senior
Robby Randolph (Cranberry Township, Pa./North Catholic) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and freshman
Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) sewed up the shutout by pitching the ninth inning.
Senior left fielder
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) opened the scoring in the third inning by singling in senior first baseman
Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.). Clary scored Grove City's second run of the inning when he came home on Kilbane's force play.
Freshman center fielder
Nico Rodriguez (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) cracked a solo home run in the fourth inning, pushing the lead to 3-0. Clary scored on a fifth inning sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman
Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian).
Junior right fielder
Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning, giving Grove City a 5-0 lead.
Clary finished 2 for 5 while Hamilton and Kilbane both doubled.
Saturday, Grove City trailed 4-0 in the second inning before charging back for the win. After scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the Wolverines surged ahead with a six-run sixth inning.
Rodriguez doubled in Williams to cut the deficit to 4-3. Clary tied the game as his bases-loaded hit batsman forced home sophomore shortstop
Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford). Junior catcher
C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) then put Grove City ahead by belting a three-run triple that scored Clary, Tambellini and freshman second baseman
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian).
Kilbane then singled in Saylor to put Grove City up 8-4. Clary closed the scoring when he came in on Kilbane's force play in the eighth inning.
Vittone doubled and singled while Clary went 2 for 4 with three runs scored. Rodriguez finished 2 for 3 with a sacrifice fly. Kilbane also had two hits.
Freshman pitcher
Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada) earned his second win of the season after pitching seven innings. He allowed three earned runs and six hits. Umland struck out 10. He has 21 strikeouts in 12 innings this season.
Sophomore
Nate Hamel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) pitched two innings of relief.
Grove City returns to action Monday in Lake Myrtle, Fla., at 11 a.m. against Saint Mary's (Minn.).
