Comeback falls short

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Freshman forward Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) fired in a career-high 19 points and senior forward Allison Podkul (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) recorded a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double Thursday night but the Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 75-62 decision at Westminster in the semifinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Memorial Field House.

Grove City trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, 40-25, before a pair of Hannon baskets and a layup by junior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) helped Grove City trim the lead to 42-31 by halftime.

Grove City trailed 54-43 late in the third quarter but produced an 11-2 run. Junior center Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) closed the third period scoring with a pair of free throws. In the fourth quarter, Hannon scored seven straight points and freshman guard Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) capped the run with a transition layup with 7:46 left in regulation.

However, Westminster held Grove City to one field goal over the next four minutes and the Wolverines could not reclaim the lead.

Polczynski added 10 points for Grove City (17-9). Hannon and freshman center Kiley Ingram (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) both had four rebounds. Westminster (18-8) held a 40-36 edge on the glass.

Grove City shot 22 of 68 (32 percent) from the field while Westminster hit 30 of 56 (54 percent) field goal attempts. Westminster had 16 turnovers while Grove City committed a dozen turnovers.

Podkul recorded four steals and Ingram had two thefts. Kallock, Podkul and Polczynski all had two assists.

Grove City will now await a potential invitation to next week's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship Tournament. Those berths will be awarded Monday afternoon.
