WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 90-72 verdict Tuesday night at top-seeded Washington & Jefferson in the quarterfinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
Senior guard
Ben Rose (Helena, Ala./Helena) paced Grove City with 13 points while junior forward
Elijah White (Zelienople, Pa./Portersville Christian) posted a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double for the Wolverines.Â
Grove City jumped out to an 8-0 lead as Rose, White, freshman forward
John Ward (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) and freshman center
Russ Gump (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) all scored from the field. W&J (22-4) countered with a 10-0 run to take its first lead of the game.
Grove City reclaimed the lead, 16-14, as freshman forward
Ben Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) scored in the paint and freshman center
Christian Wiseman (Martinsville, Ind./Indian Creek) drained two free throws.Â
Freshman guard
Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell) buried a three-pointer with three minutes left in the half to put the Wolverines ahead 31-30. W&J closed the first half on an 11-1 run, however, and led 41-32 at the intermission.
Consecutive field goals from White and Ward trimmed W&J's lead to 67-62 midway through the second half. However, W&J scored nine straight points to reclaim a double-digit lead.
Grove City shot 30 of 73 (41 percent) from the field for the game. W&J finished 34 of 71 (48 percent), including 18-of-34 (53 percent) accuracy in the second half.Â
Rose added six rebounds for Grove City, helping the Wolverines accumulate a 52-33 rebound advantage. Rose also recorded four steals. Freshman guard
Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) recorded three assists.Â
Sophomore forward
Luca Robinson (Castaic, Calif./Hart) finished with nine points for Grove City and Bock added eight.
Kyran Mitchell led W&J with 26 points. W&J will host No. 5 Waynesburg in Thursday's semifinals at 8 p.m.
Grove City will lose seniors Rose, center
Josh Brown (Enumclaw, Wash./Enumclaw) and guard
Isaac Thrasher (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) to graduation. Brown and Thrasher both scored four points Tuesday night. All three men helped Grove City to the 2020 conference title and the second round of the NCAA Championship Tournament as sophomores.
