GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Stout defense and a decided edge on the glass Wednesday night helped lift the Grove City College men's basketball team to a 57-36 win over visiting Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City (3-5, 2-3 PAC) out-rebounded Bethany, 64-34. The Wolverines also limited Bethany (0-8, 0-6 PAC) to 15-of-57 (26 percent) shooting from the field for the game.
Sophomore guard
Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) fired in a career-high 20 points to lead Grove City. Sophomore forward
Ben Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) added 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting.Â
Yarberough scored six of Grove City's first 10 points, helping the Wolverines to a 10-2 lead three minutes into the game. Grove City held a 13-7 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the first half before breaking open the game with a 17-0 run.
Junior forward
Jon Weir (Venetia, Pa./Quaker Valley) sparked the run by scoring in the paint. Cano added a pair of field goals while Yarberough scored seven straight points. Freshman guard
Daniel Penosky (Fort Mill, S.C./Legion) added a three-pointer.
The Wolverines led 36-11 at halftime. Grove City then led by as many as 34 points in the second half.Â
Sophomore guard
Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell) pulled in a career-high 14 rebounds for Grove City. Freshman guard
Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) grabbed eight rebounds while Cano and senior center
Josh Bryan (Salem, Va./Salem) each had seven rebounds.
Bryan also had four assists. Bock and Weir each assisted three field goals.Â
Grove City finished the game 24 of 75 (32 percent) from the floor. The Wolverines had 14 turnovers while Bethany had 13 turnovers.Â
Cole Dailey led Bethany with 11 points.
Grove City returns to action Saturday, December 17 at Penn State-New Kensington. That non-conference game will start at 1 p.m.
