GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Five Grove City College men's basketball players scored in double figures Saturday afternoon but visiting Washington & Jefferson slipped past the Wolverines, 79-76, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
Sophomore forward
Luca Robinson (Castaic, Calif./Hart) palced Grove City with a season-high 17 points while junior forward
Elijah White (Zelienople, Pa./Portersville Christian) posted 11 points. Senior guard
Ben Rose (Helena, Ala./Helena), junior forward
Joshua McCray (Jessup, Md./Ashville College, U.K.) and freshman guard
Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell) all added 10 points.
W&J (12-3, 7-1 PAC) charged out to an 18-4 lead nine minutes into the game before Grove City battled back. White's jumper with one minute left in the half cut W&J's lead to 32-25.
Grove City trailed 32-25 at halftime but scored the first six points of the second half in a 90-second span. Rose, Robinson and sophomore forward
Jon Weir (Venetia, Pa./Quaker Valley) all scored in the quick 6-0 spurt.
Robinson's steal and layup with 15:45 left then gave Grove City its first lead, 41-40. However, W&J's Kyran Mitchell buried a three-pointer on the next possession to spark a 12-3 run.
White's three-point play with eight seconds left cut W&J's lead to 79-76. Following two missed free throws, Grove City had a chance to force overtime but an off-balance three-point attempt missed.
McCray led Grove City with eight rebounds while Rose and Weir both had six rebounds. Grove City held a 54-46 edge on the glass. Rose also dished out a career-high nine assists for the Wolverines. He added three blocks.Â
Sophomore forward
Sam Schudel (Stuttgart, Germany, Stuttgart) added three assists and Robinson recorded three steals.Â
Grove City shot 31 of 80 (39 percent) for the game while W&J went 30 of 74 (41 percent). W&J had 10 turnovers and Grove City committed 15 turnovers.
Mitchell led W&J with 22 points.
Grove City will host Saint Vincent at 7:30 p.m. Monday in conference action.
