WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team's record-setting 2021 season ended Friday night with a 5-3 setback against Saint Vincent in an elimination game at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, hosted by Washington & Jefferson at Ross Memorial Park.
W&J edged Grove City, 1-0, in Friday's first game of the day, the winner's bracket final.
Grove City out-hit Saint Vincent, 11-9, in Friday's nightcap, but the Wolverines left eight runners in scoring position and 11 total runners on base.
Grove City forged a 2-2 tie in the top of the fourth when sophomore center fielder
Kaz Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) belted a solo home run to right center.
Saint Vincent (17-17) scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-2 lead. However, the Wolverines cut the lead in half in the sixth when sophomore
Noah Cyphert (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) launched a pinch-hit solo home run.
The Wolverines loaded the bases in the seventh but could not tie the game or take the lead.

Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) doubled as part of a 3-for-5 outing while sophomore catcher
C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) doubled and singled. Cyphert finished 2 for 2 and Hoffman went 2 for 4.
Sophomore pitcher
Elijah White (Zelienople, Pa./Portersville Christian) started and allowed three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out two. White took the defeat, moving his record to 3-1. Sophomore
Austin Basham (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief. He allowed one earned run and struck out two.
Junior pitcher
Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) fired his conference-leading seventh complete game in Friday's opener, allowing no earned runs. He struck out nine and yielded seven hits over eight innings.
Hamilton and Orner both singled for Grove City. Orner finished with a .454 batting average, the top mark in the conference. Hamilton laced a single-season record 22 doubles this spring while Saylor scored a program-record 52 runs. Ostrowski struck out 82 men, which is the second-highest single-season total in program history. He finished the season 8-2.
Grove City's 28 wins this season match the program record, set in 2019. The Wolverines won a school-record 22 league games this spring.
