Grove City edged in semis

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team closed the spring 2021 season Tuesday night by dropping a 2-1 decision to visiting Washington & Jefferson in the semifinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Don Lyle Field.

Grove City (7-2) broke through at 89:57 when junior midfielder Bryce Deaven (Newport, Pa./Greenwood) scored in front of the goal area. Junior defender Drew Yun (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) assisted Deaven's goal, his first score of the season.

The Wolverines appeared to take a 1-0 lead at 8:17 when sophomore forward Mark Guinta (Fairfield, Conn./Christian Heritage) beat W&J goalie Samuel Miller. However, an offside violation negated the goal.

Third-seeded W&J (7-2-1) broke a scoreless tie at 51:11 when Jake Fetterman scored. Jayden Da boosted the lead to 2-0 when he scored at 73:54. Da also assisted Fetterman's goal.

W&J held an 11-7 edge in shots. Each team had three corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Luke Greenway (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) stopped four shots for Grove City while Miller made two saves.

Grove City will lose seniors Jeffrey Biddle (Grove City, Pa./Grove City), Wyatt Grimm (Volant, Pa./Grove City) and Seth Wade (Winchester, Va./Sherando) to graduation. The Wolverines project to return 10 starters for the fall season, which will begin in August.
