Grove City sweeps Westminster

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team posted 28 total runs Sunday afternoon in sweeping a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Westminster at Jack Behringer Field. Grove City (15-7, 13-4 PAC) earned a 10-0 win in the opener and then rolled to an 18-3 Game Two victory. The wins give Grove City a 3-0 sweep of this weekend's conference games with Westminster.

Junior pitcher Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) fired a five-hit shutout in the opener for Grove City. Ostrowski (5-1) struck out eight and did not walk a batter in his seven innings. He earned his first shutout and fourth complete game of the season.

Grove City bolted to a 5-0 lead in the second inning. Sophomore center fielder Aaron Jenks (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) opened the scoring when roped a two-run single that scored freshman shortstop Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) and senior DH Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley).

Sophomore right fielder Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) boosted the lead to 5-0 when his bases-clearing double scored Jenks, junior third baseman Matt Lew (Redmond, Wash./Bellevue Christian) and senior left fielder Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian). 

Jenks stole third base and scored on a throwing error in the fourth, giving Grove City a 6-0 lead. Tambellini's sacrifice fly then scored Clary. In the sixth, senior first baseman Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) cracked a two-run double that scored Jenks and junior pinch runner Matt Knauer (Allison Park, Pa./Eden Christian). Sophomore catcher C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) then scored on a balk.

Hamilton and Tambellini both finished 2 for 2. Saylor added a double.

Grove City pounded out 18 hits in Game Two. The Wolverines scored in seven of eight innings, including six multiple-run innings.

Orner led the way by going 4 for 5 with a triple and double. Saylor tripled, singled and scored three runs while Hamilton and Jenks both doubled and singled. Tambellini and freshman DH Isaak Flaming (Dresden, Maine/Morse) went 2 for 4. Baccari scored three times and freshman second baseman Matson Higgins (Lucinda, Pa./North Clarion) scored twice. 

Grove City tied the game in the second as Jenks doubled home Baccari. Clary's bunt single scored Flaming with the go-ahead run. 

The Wolverines led 7-2 in the fourth when senior second baseman Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) singled in Hamilton and Saylor.

Senior pitcher Lake Pry (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) started and allowed two runs in four innings. He struck out three and yielded four hits. Freshman Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) earned the win by pitching three innings of relief. He allowed one unearned run while striking out five men. Sophomore Austin Basham (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) closed out the win with two scoreless relief innings.

Grove City will host Bethany (10-8 PAC) at 1 p.m. Friday in a conference doubleheader at Jack Behringer Field.
