Grove City falls to 3-3 in PAC

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Geneva (24-4, 7-1 PAC). Geneva won the opener 10-2, then held on for a 3-2 victory in the second game.

In Game Two, Grove City (8-12, 3-3 PAC) pulled to within 3-2 when freshman catcher Emily Smyth (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) roped a two-run single that scored junior second baseman Cara Polese (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest) and sophomore pitcher Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley). Grove City stranded pinch runner Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) in the seventh, however.

Senior first baseman Haley Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) helped lead Grove City by going 2 for 3 in the second game. Freshman third baseman Maralee Caldana (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) doubled.

Dawson pitched six innings and allowed no earned runs. She permitted four hits. Two errors in the fifth inning helped Geneva take a 3-0 lead.

Grove City grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opener as Dietz's first-inning double scored Polese and Smyth. Smyth went 2 for 3 with a double while Dawson and junior shortstop Lexi Buck (Akron, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) both singled twice.

Senior pitcher Ashley Cornelius (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) allowed six earned runs in four innings. She took the setback. Freshman Kaitlyn Constantino (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) pitched in relief in the fifth.

The Wolverines return to action Thursday when they visit Waynesburg in a conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
